BETWEEN DEATH & FLIGHT is an epistolary creative nonfiction book that follows a transmasculine, Latino teenager's stay in a US ICE detention center for undocumented children, following an escape from his home country due to transphobic violence. Fictionalized and told primarily through journal-style entries, the story explores the author's confinement, stripping of freedom, and existence as an inherently transgressive self.

"I’m in jail. Sort of. Okay, I’m not in jail. I’m not in jail at all, but I’m close enough to it that I feel a hint of recognition at the word. Like maybe in a hundred years some other stupid seventeen-year-old might read about this place and exclaim 'holy shit, that was literally jail'"

The transgression of running away, yes, but also my 'trans'gression, if you’ll pardon the pun, and both are inseparable from each other for reasons I cannot bring myself to explain"
